Ofsted safe and Sound publication

Ofsted have produced the Ofsted Safe and Sound publication to detail how well registered childcare settings have helped children to Stay Safe and Be Healthy. Each childcare setting should have received details of this publication.

One setting in 50 provides outstanding childcare. Safe and sound identifies areas of best practice and gives examples. It also shows how weaker settings are improving in response to inspection. The materials include 20 questions to help providers examine their own practice in the light of Safe and sound.

Ofsted has launched a new website, Safe and sound, showing how registered childcare providers are helping children to stay safe and be healthy. The information and resources on the site are intended to be used as a tool to help providers assess and improve their practice.

In settings that are outstanding in keeping children safe, children:
• learn how to keep themselves safe
• have their concerns taken seriously
• are kept safe by adults who are suitable, well qualified, fully understand their role, operate clear child safety procedures, and assess and manage risks effectively.

In settings that are outstanding in helping children to be healthy, children:
• develop an excellent understanding of healthy eating and providers work closely with parents
• enjoy exceptional opportunities for physical exercise
• learn how to stay healthy
• of all ages including from birth to three are supported well.

Safe and sound says that, overall, providers can be proud of the very real differences they are making to the lives of children and their families. But there is still some way to go to ensure that every child in every setting is safe and sound, all day and every day.

Explore Safe and sound, think about it and discuss it with colleagues. Most important, use it to help you provide even better outcomes for children. You too can be outstanding!
